Yo Ho Ho, a Pirate's Life Might Be More Profitable...

So, we all know life is abhorrently expensive. From inflation to the rising greed of the 10% to living in the most expensive place on Earth and not having the means to leave. Here we are. I get paid a shit salary with a government job (the benefits are fantastic though and I do milk them for all their worth) and I have to pay far too much in rent. I must retain a domestic partnership because I cannot possibly make as much as a man (don’t tell me that’s not true I live it daily) and my salary covers our rent... that’s it.

This is my very pointed way of saying there isn’t much extra left over and when you find out the cost to indie publish your heart stops for an instant because holy mother forking shirt balls (points if you know the reference), it’s expensive. How are others managing this? Does everyone just have a secret stash of $20,000 that they have for emergencies? If you do, please explain how that happened. I am seriously considering a life of crime to subsidize my dream of publishing a book... hey that might be a good story. Anyways, I don’t own a ship, so pirating is out, despite the title of this post. I have no ties to the criminal element so not like I could score a big payout any time soon. The lottery has been a bust for many years. But it looks as if my fate isn’t all that dismal as I have some pretty generous investors that want to support my dreams.  (Parents, am I right?)

Let me know if you’ve ever self-published or indie published! How was your experience and what would you have done differently?

Lastly, would you buy my book? I’m going big, using top notch editors, a design team, the works basically. Take a look at Dawning of the Sun on my works page, tell me if you’d read it! Every beta has thoroughly enjoyed the ride even if there were one or two hick-ups (to be polished with an editor). Can I sell this piece of my soul to you?

Oh, did that seem unclear. Let me be crystal here, I AM PUBLISHING MY FIRST NOVEL! I have signed a contract, had a panic attack at the amount of money I just agreed to pay, and still don’t quite understand what is happening to me. I need to complete my final pass of the manuscript before I even have an editor’s eyes on it, but it’s in the works. It will likely be some time before you see my shining (for some reason the cover is shiny in my head), book grace this world.

    Author

M.E. Kalous studied English, humanities, and publishing at Simon Fraser University. She has a deep love of Greek and Norse mythology and all things related to the Inferno. She is a voracious reader of fiction, fantasy, fairy tales, and sci-fi.

She lives in Vancouver, B.C., with her impossibly tall other half and their two beloved hell spawn (others may refer to them as cats). Her appetite for fantasy extends beyond the passive into the realm of Dungeons & Dragons, as an enthusiastic, but clumsy player. Dawning of the Sun is her debut novel.
